Ehrwald is situated in the northern part of the mountainous region of Tyrol, close to the border with Bavaria (Garmisch-Partenkirchen). With a population of approx. 2,600, Ehrwald is an idyllic alpine village in the holiday region of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Ehrwald's excellent infrastructure offers many leisure possibilities.

Ehrwald and the Zugspitze

The border between Austria and Germany runs across the western peak of the Zugspitze. With an altitude of 9,732 ft (2,962 m) this is Germany's highest mountain but can also be reached from Ehrwald and the Tyrolean side by a modern, state of the art cable car. The Zugspitze is part of the Wetterstein mountain range which towers majestically above Ehrwald.
From the top of the Zugspitze you can enjoy breathtaking views.  A visit to the Zugspitz-Museum is a popular outing, in winter there is skiing on the glacier, in summer it is a wonderful area for mountaineering and hiking and the restaurant at the summit hosts many attractive events.

Ehrwald is a popular winter sports resort offering downhill skiing on the Ehrwalder Alm, Sonnenhang and Wetterstein as well as on the Zugspitz Glacier

UNESCO Cultural Heritage - The mountain fires of Ehrwald

Each year at the time of the summer solstice (on the nearest Saturday to midsummer) the impressive mountain fires around Ehrwald are set alight.

From a vantage point in the “Moos“ (valley) you can enjoy a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains, all aglow with their amazing fiery images.

Since 2010 the mountain fires of Ehrwald have been on the UNESCO cultural heritage list. 

The midsummer mountain fires are truly a  marvellous spectacle!

Exploring around Ehrwald

In summer you can purchase a Z-Ticket which gives you free or significantly reduced access to many facilities and means of transport within the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena.

In winter the "Top Snow Card" (a lift pass for 2 - 9 days) gives you access to all ski areas in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, as well as in the nearby German resorts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Grainau und Mittenwald. 

Many wonderful excursion destinations and world-famous sights such as the Bavarian royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, the picturesque town of Oberammergau, the Monastery of Ettal, the Wieskirche, the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck and Swarovski's famous Crystal World are all within easy reach of Ehrwald, so you will never be at a loss for something to do during your holiday.
